This is ridiculous. I'm at the point (long past, actually) where I have so much to say that I can't say anything at all.

So, random:

1. I made this post regarding the Russian execution video. In response to one (or several) abuse reports, the OP has been suspended. Thanks to stoney321 (LJ) for this well-thought out post and further research. I haven't been able to find any recent news on this. Maybe someone else out there has been luckier?

2. Just recently found this seven-year old rant against the Harry Potter series and this editorial: "Dumbing down American readers" by Harold Bloom. Let me say that I've a knee-jerk reaction to anything that Harold Bloom has to say. I am not reasonable in this. I think the man has had a stranglehold on generations of literature students and most of his criticism makes me form a fist to battle random free electrons in the air. Norton anthologies are full of his interpretations and biases as well as his selections (and notice the absences with every new edition). His idea of canon makes me chortle and choke. I have felt this way for a long, long time. So I am not surprised that he finds popular lit banal and horrible and he thinks many people are stupid. And I laugh at what he thinks children should be reading instead of JKR. He is dating himself if he thinks that children would find these classics immediately accessible.

And then I review his list of Western canon and Elinor Wylie is on his list. Considering that quite a few critics want to see her dropped and forgotten, this surprises me. I agree with Bloom about something. *runs screaming for the hills*

3. I watched the first two episodes of Due South last night. I am a horrible person. Not because I watched the show but because I had no interest in slashing Fraser/Ray V. Why? Because I don't find David Marciano attractive in the role of Ray Vecchio (I qualify my statement because I've found the attraction meter for actors/actresses can vary depending on the role). I cringe at the nineties fashions. Cringe! This makes me shallow and a bad fan. *hides*

I haven't posted in days and days and days precisely because I have a million things to say and I can say none of them coherently right now. I wish I had the energy to follow your Bloom links -- I hate him, too. But I'm just *so tired*.

I wave weakly from the divan towards the tea and lemon biscuits instead.

Lemon biscuits? Whee! *joins you on the settee opposite with a cup of tea (splash of milk, two sugars).

But did you *enjoy* dS? I was happily surprised to find that Vecchio grew on me -- so much so that overall I prefer him to the second Ray.

Harold Bloom's a douche, but I *heart* Wylie's work. Confusing!

Yes, I'm enjoying dS. I *like* Vecchio, I'm just not feeling slashy about him (but I'm only two episodes in). The only shippy feeling that I've had so far has been between Fraser and the assistant at the consulate. Was she only in the pilot?

Harold Bloom just *bothers* me.

but I *heart* Wylie's work.

Really? And here I thought I was the only one. But then again, I think Teasdale shouldn't be thrown on the rubbish heap of obscurity either so what do I know? *g*

I should save my rant about the male bias disguised as 'objective' aesthetic in academia for another day.

Vecchio and Fraser's relationship deepens over s1; even if you end up not shipping them, the last few episodes of the season will help you see what others ship (if that makes any sense...?).

Hey, I'm a massive HD and Katharine Anne Porter fan, too; I've a soft spot for lady modernists. ♥

Oh that makes perfect sense. I always feel like there's something wrong with me if I don't see a popular ship in the source material. Plus I know there's something wrong with me when I don't buddy ship as much as I should (I tend towards strife in my slash, femslash and het although that's not an absolute). *is weird*

Yay for lady modernists!
